Emptiness here is not absence, but material. The copper frames, hand-soldered and open on every side, enclose less than they make room. What hangs inside, a fragment of an old punch card, is less an object than an occasion: a reason to let the emptiness around it exist.
The card itself once carried a language without rest, each hole an instruction, each pattern a repetition. Here that has fallen away. What remains is a fragment, partly extinguished in black, held together with thread where it tore. No longer text, only carrier.
Standing upright, the frames form a small architecture, not a building that protects, but a series of rooms that close off nothing. Copper and cardboard will weather and discolor together. Not as decay, but as continuation: the work keeps breathing, even after it is made. — Marinda Vandenheede
