The starting point is a page from an insurance law book — "Assurances Maritimes" — dry, legal language that once regulated risk, liability, and damages down to the smallest detail. This too is a system: a text that tries to hold grip on the unpredictable, on everything that can go wrong at sea.
In this work, that text disappears. Letters are removed, lines covered in ink, until only fragments of the original argument remain. What is left behind is not emptiness, but a new drawing: branching, organic structures that spread across the page like roots or veins — traces of something that no longer needs language.
It is a part of my work in which I explore what remains when a system of words, rules, and clauses is taken away. Not as destruction, but as transformation: what disappears makes room for something else, something that cannot be captured in articles and paragraphs. — Marinda Vandenheede
