The new exhibition at Ronewa Art Projects in Berlin presents a continuation of the collaboration between Chris Bünter and Tashi Brauen, who have combined their distinct artistic practices to create a new series of 14 works titled Road to Nowhere. This exhibition marks a significant step in their partnership, which has evolved over the years, blending the artists’ individual techniques into acreactive and often unpredictable process.
The works in this series are a fusion of collage and monoprint, utilizing materials from Du, a Swiss magazine rich in cultural and artistic history. Du, which has been in circulation since 1941, is well-known for its intellectual content and focus on culture, history, and art. The artists have creatively recycled old issues of this magazine, giving new life to its pages through a series of spontaneous gestures that contrast with the more polished, edited nature of the magazine’s original content.
The collaboration itself follows a method similar to the Surrealist exquisite corpse technique, where the works pass between Brauen and Bünter multiple times. Brauen’s monotypes on paper serve as a starting point, which Bünter then responds to by adding his own square and circular cut-out collages. This back-and-forth process, sometimes repeated up to four times, creates an evolving dialogue between the two artists and between the materials themselves. The layering of the collages and monoprints allows for a dialogue between different elements, the intuitive and the intellectual, the spontaneous and the structured.
The exhibition also reflects the artists’ ongoing exploration of the concept of site-specific art. Like their previous exhibitions in Basel and Bern, this new series adapts to its space, responding to the unique environment of Rowena Art Projects in Berlin. The artists have previously created large- scale installations that completely transform the gallery space, such as the wall installation A Day in October (2021) in Basel, where the work covered an entire wall and used both the front and reverse sides of the collages. This playful reversal between positive and negative spaces mirrors the duality found in their artistic approach—where both sides of the work hold equal value and meaning.
As part of this exhibition, an artist book has also been created, reflecting their unique process and the double-sided nature of their works. The book, like the exhibition itself, emphasizes the idea that both the "back" and "front" of a piece are equally significant. Visitors can see the book at the front desk, offering further insight into the collaborative process and the resulting works.
In many ways, Road to Nowhere is the next act in an ongoing narrative that continues to evolve through the artists’ dialogues with one another and with the materials they choose to work with. It’s a meditation on intellectualism, leisure, travel, and the passing of time, all wrapped in the collaborative energy between two artists with a deep mutual respect and a shared history of exploration and creativity.
